Case Studies — Good Shepherd Services

"Speakeasy is honest, which is kind of amazing for an internet service provider. With other ISPs, you get stuck in communication loops because nobody really knows how to answer your question. With Speakeasy, they get back to you, they follow up, and they do what they claim to do."
— David Gerber, IT Director

Company Background
Good Shepherd Services has been serving the youth of New York City for over a century. The organization's non-profit programs include adoption, foster care, after-school programs, community-based programs, and transfer high schools. Good Shepherd has over 900 employees and 51 locations, including offices, residences and two major data centers. They have worked closely with Speakeasy's parent company Best Buy for Business for many years and began implementing Speakeasy connectivity services in January 2008.
Overview
- Challenge
Good Shepherd uses bandwidth for Internet access, email, youth programs, VPN between sites, and access to New York's automated child welfare information system. As its programs grew, connectivity costs (T3 connections at both of their data centers) began to spiral upwards. - Solution
Best Buy for Business referred the organization to Speakeasy with the promise that it could sustain or increase its bandwidth with significant cost savings. Unlike a T3, Speakeasy Business Ethernet is easy to install and manage because it uses existing infrastructure and a single piece of hardware. - Results
Good Shepherd now has Speakeasy connectivity at 19 locations, including Bonded T1s, OneLink™ DSL, and a 10x10 Mbps Business Ethernet circuit at its Manhattan headquarters and datacenter. The agency estimates its total savings with Speakeasy at over $140,000 per year.
